One of these methods is cold chamber die casting, which is generally used for aluminum alloys.
What is Cold Chamber Die Casting?
Die casting is a manufacturing process that is used to create metal parts by forcing molten metal into a mold. Cold chamber die casting is a specific die casting method that requires the use of an outside furnace to heat the metal. Once heated in a separate melting pot, the molten metal is then poured into the shot chamber using a ladle. A plunger then pushes the metal into the die cavity, holding it in place until the metal has solidified and can be removed.
Cold chamber die casting is a process that is ideal for metals with higher melting points and corrosive properties, such as aluminum, brass, and copper alloys. Hot chamber die casting, which is a generally more efficient method, cannot be used for these metals due to their high melting points. This method is generally used with metals with lower melting points, such as zinc, lead, and magnesium.
The Cold Chamber Die Casting Process
The main difference between cold chamber die casting and hot chamber die casting is that in cold chamber die casting, the metal is heated in a furnace outside of the chamber and then transferred using a ladle. Once the metal is poured into the chamber, a plunger pushes it into the die cavity, using over 10,000 psi of pressure to hold it in place until it solidifies. The die then opens back up and plunger pushes the now finished part further so that it remains in the ejector die. The casting is then ejected using ejector pins, and the plunger returns to its original position.
Cold Chamber Die Casting Advantages & Disadvantages
Cold chamber die casting is a cost-effective process that has many applications and can be used to manufacture many different parts and components. Parts made using this process are also very durable and made with tight tolerances that result in them being highly accurate. Cold chamber die casting is also a relatively fast and efficient process that can maintain this level of accuracy even when producing in high quantities. While this process has many advantages, it has its disadvantages as well. Mainly, cold chamber die casting, while efficient, is a much slower process than hot chamber die casting.
